The Republican candidate's views on Russia are misguided
For a candidate whose foreign policy expertise was presumably sharpened by his two year mission in Europe, Mitt Romney's pronunciations on the Russian Federation are especially surprising. In recent weeks, Romney's views on Russia have come into focus and become more widely scrutinized, notably in recent articles in the New York Times and the Washington Post.
In one exceptional and already notorious case, the Republican candidate elect stated that Russia was the United States' "number one geopolitical foe." Although he would admit that states like Iran and North Korea pose a greater immediate threat to global stability, Romney appears to cling to the implicit assumption that a post-Soviet Russia still poses the gravest danger to American interests. In particular, he has cited Russian support for rogue nations at the United Nations; given Russia's status as a permanent member of the Security Council, the Kremlin is able to shield regimes such as Bashar al-Assad's despotic and cruel regime in Syria from international censure.
The logical fallacy behind Romney's conception of Russia as America's greatest enemy is apparent. Despite Romney's determination that the anchor of the former Soviet Union remains a serious threat to American freedom, the reality suggests otherwise. Admittedly, Russia today is mistrustful and suspicious of American motives, particularly regarding the construction of a missile shield in Central and Eastern Europe. At home, Russia is far from a free country; "managed democracy," a term too often used by Western media outlets, has served as a byword for Vladimir Putin's "United Russia" party's domination of the political sphere for more than a decade.
But Russia hardly qualifies as the U.S.'s most pressing adversary. Rather, both the modern Russian Federation and the United States face similar challenges: both struggle, though in different ways, with the threat of Islamic-inspired fundamentalist terrorism. While the United States may face the impending question of how to deal with rising Chinese economic power, Russia has already been forced to accept economic second-power status. Unlike the U.S., Russia faces acute immediate challenges: she must confront an imminent demographic crisis arguably worse than anything faced by the least fecund Western European countries. While Russian GDP growth had been phenomenal under the first few years of Putin's administration, the long-term outlook for an extractive-resource and, specifically, petro-state economy seems uncertain.
Both Russia and the United States face similar challenges, albeit to different extremes, of how to reduce large nuclear arsenals, push back terrorism, and address long-term competitiveness issues. In the post-Soviet era, the two countries have been on remarkably good terms considering their Cold War relations. With that in mind, the Republicans' apparent desire to return to imminent nuclear-war rivalry is quite baffling.
Mr. Romney would do well to avoid characterizing Russia as evil. His own understanding of Russian relations can in part be informed or explained by the suggestion that he views foreign policy as a "zero sum" game. Such an outlook bears a depressing resemblance to former president George W. Bush's pronouncement to the effect of "you are either with us or against us." Good or evil, blessed or satanic; these are the kinds of counterproductive, black and white judgments that Barack Obama, however successful or not he has been at foreign policy, has at least avoided in his administration. It would be a shame to revert to this good-evil divide.
Instead, Romney and the American public would do well to recognize who is working to deliver reform and democracy in Russia and who is hindering this effort. Transparency International's Corruption Perceptions Index regularly lists the world's largest country as among the most corrupt. In many cases, large-scale corruption has also turned Russia into a violent and lawless state. Witness the now well-known death of Moscow lawyer Sergei L. Magnitsky and the U.S. Congress' subsequent effort to pass the "Magnistsky Act" aimed at targeting corrupt bureaucrats and security officials thought to be behind Magnitsky's death after he exposed a massive fraud. Romney and the Republican Party would do well to draw the distinction between an ill-informed view of a "Russia" driven by ulterior motives and the reality: the desire of Russians to secure a more ethical and democratic future for their country.
Russia is not the U.S.'s best friend, but neither should the two states be anything approaching real enemies. Romney's conception of Russia is indeed confusing to today's generation of young Americans who have grown up in a post-Cold War era, and who in many cases know -- or are among -- the millions of former U.S.S.R. immigrants who have moved to the United States.
Russia has changed and modernized considerably since the fall of the Soviet Union. Any visitor to today's Moscow would surely balk at the idea that the capital represents Washington D.C.'s top adversary. Romney's own misguided stance re-emphasizes the need to interact with contemporary powers through diplomacy and understanding rather than jingoistic and uninformed nationalism.

A number of the performances are plain stunning - Aran and Joan, in particular, seem born to move - and in many ways watching the movie is like watching a sporting event; there are winners and losers and favorites to cheer on.
It's an intense journey, and Kargman captures it all, down to the dancers' bloodied and bruised feet.
Yes, it is possible to create a gripping documentary about the ballet world without resorting to "Black Swan" melodramatics.
Because its subjects are so driven and so talented, "First Position," which is about ballet, is more gripping than the norm.
It's in the quick audience-reaction shots of the young dancers' exultant parents and cringing private instructors that the movie finds its most nakedly human moments.
The film shows the grueling work it takes for young dancers like Zamora to look effortless on stage, and First Position shows teachers who range from supportive to borderline abusive.
It's a wealth of material at odds with a scant running time and shallow focus.
When it's over, you won't remember so much about who won and who lost. Instead, what remains is the expression on a young dancer's face, reflected in a mirror: showing the joy of being in love with what you do.
What we experience is the overwhelming thrill of the competition and the true agony of defeat.
It could very well compete for Best Documentary at next year's Academy Awards.
For someone (like me) who has never been to a ballet, the talent of these teens and tweens is a revelation.
It's 'Spartacus' en pointe.
Inspiring documentary about hardworking young dancers.
Almost loses its sense of good taste entirely in the final act, straining to build suspense and shape heroes. The bias hangs a little ugly in an otherwise passable, somewhat enlightening effort.
The cookie cutter format Kargman uses in presenting her subjects may be unoriginal but a safe way to introduce the filmmaker to her new audience.
Child ballet dancer and former journalist Bess Kargman brings a dancer's passion and insight to her directorial debut, illuminating the addictive magic and fierce demands of a ballet dancer's life.
Really, all of the dancers' evident passion for their art is, well, spellbinding.
These kids are proud of their tights.
Kargman follows the pre-established pattern of documentaries following competitions from crosswords to spelling bees, but the format works and she's found six kids ranging in age from 9 to 16 who are truly involving.

The Apple assembly lines within Foxconn?s manufacturing plants are very closely guarded, and getting a chance to actually see one of these assembly lines is very rare. A new video has surfaced, however, in which a Chinese reporter tours the facility with Foxconn CEO Terry Gou (via TheNextWeb, MIC Gadget).
The video shows a number of fascinating things ? the sheer size of the factory from aerial view, some footage of iPhone frames and logic boards on the production line, and more. The entire video can be found below. All of the dialogue is in Chinese, however ? but if we?re able to find a translation, we?ll let you know!

The longtime NAIA school in Cleveland was unanimously accepted Friday as a member of the Gulf South Conference in NCAA Division II, pending expected approval by the national association. Lee would play one more school year in the NAIA's Southern States Athletic Conference and then have an inaugural year in the GSC without being eligible for league championships or postseason play.
"We have been discussing the move to NCAA DII for the last two years, and very intently for the past year," Lee president Dr. Paul Conn said Saturday from Lewiston, Idaho, where the baseball Flames are in the NAIA World Series. "I discussed it with the board of directors in its January 2012 meeting, and in its meeting on May 4 I recommended that we pursue DII membership in the Gulf South, and they authorized me to do so.
"We explored membership in two other DII conferences and had positive conversations with each," Conn continued. "Ultimately, however, we decided that the Gulf South is the strongest conference in this region, and the best fit for us, because of the size of its schools, the mix of public and private institutions, the high quality of athletic competition at the national level and its strong tradition of presidential leadership."
Shorter University from the SSAC and Union University in Jackson, Tenn., are making the move this coming year to the Gulf South.
Conn noted that a GSC committee including league commissioner Nate Salant, West Alabama's president and Alabama-Huntsville's and Delta State's athletic directors visited the Lee campus earlier this month and reported favorably to the GSC's expansion committee.
Other current league members are Christian Brothers, North Alabama, Valdosta State, West Florida and West Georgia.
With more than 4,500 students, Lee is the largest private university besides Vanderbilt in Tennessee, and it has grown immensely in buildings and facilities during Conn's 26 years as president. It has won the Commissioner's Cup for the best overall athletic program in the SSAC six of the last seven years.
Salant's statement Friday called Lee "one of the best NAIA schools in the country, not only from an athletic perspective but also from an academic one. Lee is not your typical private school in that is very large, has a tremendous following in the community and is in very good financial shape." He further praised Lee's emphasis on women's sports as an attraction for his league.
"The action of the Gulf South Conference opens the door for us to begin a process that we believe will raise the level of athletics at Lee," Conn said. "We will file an official application with the NCAA this week and are optimistic that they will act favorably, although that is far from a sure thing.
"We enjoy our relationship with the SSAC. It is a fine conference, and we hate to leave it. But we feel that Lee's trajectory for the past two decades has been always to become better and to operate at a higher level in every way, including athletics, and moving to the NCAA DII is the natural way for us to do that."
Lee has won the last four NAIA national championships in women's soccer, and two-time NAIA player of the year Jamie Achten was honored last weekend by the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame as co-female athlete of the year for the state.
Lee also has made final fours in baseball, basketball and volleyball while regularly garnering national qualifiers or high rankings in softball, golf, men's soccer, tennis and cross country.
Conn acknowledged that the move "will be a big challenge" in "competing against some very strong institutions" but added that "our athletes and coaches have earned an opportunity to test themselves at this level."
Said athletic director Larry Carpenter, a former Christian college basketball All-American and coach at the school: "I've been part of Lee athletics for 37 years and have witnessed many historic events during that time. The invitation to join the Gulf South Conference marks yet another event. We've enjoyed a tremendous amount of success in the SSAC and NAIA but understand the challenge that comes by playing in the most competitive conference in NCAA II.
"The GSC schools are consistently vying for national championships and this year alone have already won won national title and had a national finalist."
John and Zillah Erickson of Blaine intended to move to a senior apartment a few years ago because it was getting to be too much to maintain their house and property.
Zillah and John Erickson wanted to sell their Blaine home a few years ago, but the housing market collapse made this difficult. Photo by Eric Hagen
They put in new windows and painted the house to make it more attractive to buyers. The roof was replaced not too long ago.
Unfortunately, the housing market collapsed and their valuation significantly decreased.
?We?re pretty well stuck here right now until things straighten out,? John said. ?I don?t want to give the place away and go through the hassle of trying to sell it for a year.?
On the other hand, Jan and Art Blair three years ago were able to sell the Orono home they lived in for almost 40 years. They now live in the Historic Rum River District condominiums in Anoka. Jan loves that they are within easy walking distance of shopping and dining options and they can have a dog in their unit.
Don Howard moved to the Guardian Angels long-term care facility in Elk River last year. His wife Alice lives at the Realife Cooperative of Coon Rapids.
Alice and Don Howard downsized and moved to the Realife Cooperative of Coon Rapids in September 2003. A stroke ultimately made it necessary for Don to move to a Guardian Angels long-term care facility in Elk River. Alice commutes almost every day from Coon Rapids to Elk River and hopes that an option closer to home will present itself.
2010 Census statistics
Every senior citizen has a different set of circumstances that dictates where they reside, but 2010 Census data shows that many are still staying in owner-occupied homes.
According to the 2010 Census for the state of Minnesota, there were 343,355 owner-occupied homes in which the householder was a person age 65 or older. There were 87,360 females and 35,599 males in that age group that were living alone.
Jan and Art Blair downsized three years ago when they moved from Orono to a new condo building in Anoka.
There were 100,270 rental units occupied by senior citizens, which includes 58,468 females and 20,032 males living on their own.
There were 33,675 seniors living in group quarters such as nursing homes during the 2010 Census study.
Jennifer Sorenson, executive director of the Minnesota HomeCare Association, said the trend is that seniors want to age in their homes, so home care options to make this possible comes into play. There are many options depending on what level of care is needed. There are personal care attendants to help with low-level needs and there are registered nurses and physical and occupational therapists that can help with higher needs. A person?s personal physician and county human services departments are good resources for help in finding out more about what is out there.
According to Andi Egbert of the Minnesota State Demographic Center, the office projects population, but does not project how many seniors are still expected to be living in their homes by 2035. There are a lot of factors such as the economy, a person?s income and availability of housing that makes it difficult to speculate.
Living at home
The Ericksons have lived in their Blaine home since 1977. They once had about 6.8 acres but have sold about half of that over the past 15 years for neighboring housing developments.
John Erickson was diagnosed with a type of bone marrow cancer six to seven years ago and has been going through treatment since then. One of his kidneys had to be removed because of the cancer. He needs a new left knee. Zillah Erickson had a kidney transplant almost five years ago.
Although they would like to downsize, they still love their home. Zillah said the neighbors are great and the family is able to helps them out with household chores. There is an over 500-foot buffer and a lot of trees Erickson planted in the back yard about 35 years ago that provides a buffer between them and the newer homes. They have an elevated deck to enjoy this private setting and to watch birds and squirrels go to the bird feeders or the heated bird bath.
They also appreciate being close to a lot of retail and dining options and the police station. They looked at The Willows of Ham Lake while shopping for a senior apartment a few years, for example, but this location and others they looked at were too far from shopping and dining for their taste.
?At some point in time you may not be able to drive, and you want to be near public transportation,? John said.
Downsizing
The Blairs were at the point about three years ago where they did not want to maintain their home and big yard in rural Orono in the southwest metro. They also wanted to be closer to retail and dining options. Many senior development options they looked at in communities like Maple Grove and Rogers were in areas where walking to these locations would be difficult, Jan said.
They were familiar with Anoka because they drove through the area to get to their cabin in northern Minnesota. They heard about a new multi-level condo being proposed and reserved a unit before the facility was completed.
?I liked the idea of moving into a town where we could walk to anything we want,? Jan said.
It took two years to sell their Orono home and they had to reduce the listing price, but Jan said the move was well worth it. They let their kids decide what items to take from the old house. Everything else they did not need was donated, sold or thrown away.
Jan said the condo building in Anoka has many community events. There are game nights, potluck dinners, coffee parties and much more. The community room is available at any time an activity is not planned. There is a library, an exercise room with a few pieces of equipment and underground parking. A five-person condominium board consists of people who live in the building. Jan is the board secretary. They hire a management company to oversee building operations and maintenance.
Long-term care
Don Howard had a stroke 22 years ago at the age of 59, just about six months after he retired from Honeywell. He was able to recover and do the daily activities he had done before the stroke.
Even after Don and Alice Howard moved to Realife in Coon Rapids he was fine, but Jan said her husband started having seizures in the years to come that took their toll. In March 2011, he had a second stroke.
He went to Camilia Rose in Coon Rapids for rehabilitation between March and May 2011 and then moved back to Realife with his wife. They hired certified nursing assistants (CNAs), they purchased a lift and other equipment to make it possible for Don to stay at home. He went through physical and occupational therapy.
After he fell in July 2011, doctors at the hospital recommended that Don move to a long-term care facility where people could help him around the clock. The doctor told them Don could stay in the hospital for three days, but then they would have to find another arrangement.
Alice wanted Don to stay close to home, but the closest vacancy they could find was at the Guardian Angels facility in Elk River. She has been very impressed with the facility because of the staff and the amenities. Chapel service, coffee time, oil painting classes, rehabilitation and exercise classes, game times, reading groups and baking classes are just several examples of activities that take place. There is a gift shop and dining room area where residents and their friends and family can go to if they want an alternative dining option.
Although she likes the facility, Alice hopes a vacancy opens up closer to Realife so she can cut down on her almost daily commute.
Long-term care is not cheap. Alice said it costs about $5,800 a month. She did not notice much of a price difference between Guardian Angels and other facilities she looked at.
?I think down the road, long-term care insurance is going to become almost a necessity,? Alice said.
Don did not have long-term care insurance because they could not afford it, she said.
The Equipment Leasing and Finance Association, the trade association that represents the equipment finance sector, just released their Monthly Leasing and Finance Index for April of this year.? Overall new equipment volume for April was $6.1 billion, up 20 percent from a year ago.? However, volume is down 10 percent from March, and The Monthly Confidence Index for May is 59.2, also down slightly from April.?
Direct Capital has seen some growth in April on our end as well.? The number of opportunities that were submitted for financing is up 20 percent over last April, while the number of those that were approved is up 25 percent (a 0.7 percent increase?from March) ? indicating that the quality of applicants and perhaps business credit-worthiness is improving.
So what does this mean for the industry?
ELFA President and CEO William G. Sutton, CAE, has said: ?April?s new business volume and credit quality metrics appear to provide evidence that the equipment finance sector continues to gain momentum.?Recent anecdotal information from ELFA members gathering in Washington, D.C., for a series of leadership meetings in mid-May supports the observation that the demand cycle for capital equipment parallels the broader economy in that both continue to strengthen, albeit slowly.?
Though the economy may still be struggling, the current low interest rates have made equipment financing easier and more attractive for many businesses.? Alternative lenders are making financing even easier, as businesses can avoid jumping through hoops at their local banks, and are much more likely to work with a less than perfect credit score.? With opportunities like this, it?s likely the number of leases will continue to rise.
If you?re ready for equipment financing, be sure to check out the equipment financing programs Direct Capital has to offer.
These and other concerns addressed before the time for elder care enables most, if not all, elements to be in place when senior care becomes necessary.
Monitoring Daily Activities of Aging Seniors Offers a "Heads Up" to the Need for Home Health Care
The time will inevitably come to implement elder care options. When aging parents begin struggling with such daily tasks as housekeeping, air jordan, meal preparation, and personal hygiene, adult children should be alerted that senior home care time has come. With early preparation as a stepping stone, franklin marshall pas cher, moving upon the decision for elder care (be it assisted living, polo ralph lauren This Christmas, Jingle Love With Personalized Baby Gifts, independent living, or nursing home) makes a formidable task less daunting. Early preparation facilitates the transition for elders from self-sufficiency to senior care.
What is the best elder care plan for all involved? Is senior care at home a viable option? Who will be the primary caretaker? How will home care finances be covered? Who will be responsible for executing the plan for senior care and ensuring that bills are payed?
When a family is young and vibrant, jeans diesel, it is difficult to focus on the need to prepare for senior home care. But,polo ralph lauren, as sure as the sun rises every day, there will come a time when parents in the home may no longer be the ones calling the shots on family activities, burberry, jeans diesel Personalised Baby Christening Presents, lifestyle choices, or even health care. Aging parents will, jordan, undoubtedly, polo ralph lauren, reach a stage in life when their adult children may have to make important decisions concerning their welfare and the wellbeing of the family. One such decision, polo ralph lauren pas cher Women's Tunics Give your Wardrobe Some Spunk!, the need for senior home care, louboutin, is certainly not an easy one to make.
Prepare for Home Health Care Before the Need Arises for Senior Home Care
No one really likes to talk about aging, louboutin pas cher, disease, and death. These concerns, however, jordan, are inevitable facts of life and dealing with them in a timely fashion makes them a little less formidable and life a little less stressful. The best time for such discussions is not when the elder actually needs home care. Discussions concerning senior care best benefits families when it takes place well before parents become seniors. Ideally, parents should initiate these discussions themselves at times when their health is in place and their children are still young. Speaking with children about senior home care and educating them on the available options is a smart move. Early knowledge and understanding will enable them to make better decisions when the time comes to do so. At this stage of the game, parents can even express their desires for their future as age and disabilities creep upon them. The question of senior care options can be overwhelming. Understanding the differences between assisted living, air jordan, independent living, and nursing homes is a positive step towards responding to the question of elder care. Once again, if parents explore these options early and communicate them to their children or those who might be responsible for their welfare, mercurial vapor, a smoother path may be traveled when the need for senior care presents itself.
Making Elder Care Decisions Calls for Clear Communication
When parents have reached the stage in life when elder care is paramount, all who are involved in senior care decision-making must communicate clearly with one another. Tension and family discord may be avoided or minimalized when this is done early. The following are some concerns that should be addressed:
In a post apocalyptic world a handful of survivors struggle to make it to the next day while caring for possibly the most important thing in the world.

This sounds fun :D
Is there a rule where you can only have one character. I'm deciding on whether or not I should make two.
Sometimes I can't help but wonder why I do what I do, until I realize that what I do makes me who I am, and I like who I am. When I make a mistake, it only makes me better. All those right choices I make aren't remembered, not even by me. But the stupid, silly, down-right insane things I do will never leave my mind and I kinda like that.

If you are planning on having a fun filled holiday this year jam packed with activities and fun sports for all of the family or your friends, then you will have a lot to consider. With so many holiday locations spread wide across the United Kingdom it can be tough when trying to narrow it down to one choice. Things like money, budgets and travel always seem to get in the way but when it comes down to it you wouldn't want to put a price on some valuable treasured life experiences and memories. There are so many activity based holidays and sporting vacations you can take all over the United Kingdom, so when researching into which holidays provide which activities you will want to consider your interests and if you think you'll enjoy those certain activities. Some holiday locations will allow you to be involved in many water based activities whilst others may be more climbing orientated, and in some cases you may even find both at the same location.
One location that a lot of people are booking up for this summer is Cornwall.
Cornwall has so much to offer when it comes to relaxing and partaking in sporting activities, with such a vast area of land differing in gradients, water and sand you can pretty much do most activities in Cornwall. It's all about deciding upon which activities are right for you so that you can make the most of your visit to Cornwall and have fun, however sometimes it can be hard to figure out what activities will take place where, sometimes you need some clear indication on what some areas provide. There are websites that do outline certain Outdoor Activities in Cornwall and they do provide the necessary information that will tell you all the activities that are available by using a professional qualified guide and tutor.
There are activity and sporting centers that run many activities professionally which is what most tourists and holiday stayers want, as they usually aren't too experienced when it comes to doing the activities and they want to learn the basics with a guide. It is a much safer way of taking part in activities when you have a guide and are signed up to a proper program, rather than just finding a cliff and attempting to climb it without the necessary safety equipment or precautions being taken, that is far too risky.
So the main reason many people are booking themselves into a holiday site at Cornwall is because there are so many fun activities to do their. There are sporting games and surfing classes and rock climbing activities, Cornwall has it all to offer and at very competitive prices too. If you are thinking of going away this year to an energetic activity based holiday location, Cornwall is certainly the place for you as it has a ridiculous amount to offer. You can relax in the sun on the beach whilst preparing for an afternoon of coasteering or sea kayaking, the possibilities are endless which is why you should book up a holiday at Cornwall now.
Western Digital may be the largest manufacturer of hard drives after its purchase of Hitachi?s storage business last year, but Seagate is hot on its heels with a surprising acquisition today.
Seagate has announced that it is to acquire a controlling interest in premium storage company LaCie. Seagate has agreed to purchase all the shares held by Philippe Spruch, chairman and CEO of LaCie. That equates to 64.5% of the total shares, giving Seagate control over the future direction of the company. The remaining shares will be purchased for cash once the deal has received government approval.
The acquisition is an intelligent move for Seagate, who inherits a premium line of storage products including network-connected solutions. It will allow them to continue to offer the LaCie brand and hardware lines as complimentary products to its existing range. There is currently very little overlap, which is likely what made the deal so tempting. From LaCie?s point of view, it was an opportunity to secure the brand?s future by joining a much bigger player in the storage business.
The main focus of the acquisition will be the hardware and brand, but Seagate also takes control of the Wuala cloud storage service, potentially opening the way for it to be incorporated into Seagate?s existing range of products.
Owners of existing LaCie products shouldn?t be concerned as it looks as though the company will continue to operate as normal for the time being. Seagate may even choose to keep it as a separate entity, although using Seagate parts. I?m sure some LaCie hardware users are hoping for improvements though, especially after the debacle over the major design flaw discovered in the LaCie Hard Disk MAX earlier this year.

Top 10 new species list draws attention to diverse biospherePublic release date: 23-May-2012 [ | E-mail | Share ]

Sneezing monkey, SpongeBob mushroom, night-blooming orchid and teensy attack wasp make 2012 list
TEMPE, Ariz. The International Institute for Species Exploration at Arizona State University and a committee of scientists from around the world announced their picks for the top 10 new species described in 2011. This is the fifth year for the top 10 new species list, which was released May 23 to coincide with the anniversary of the birth of Carolus Linnaeus, the Swedish botanist who was responsible for the modern system of plant and animal names and classifications.
On this year's top 10 new species list are a sneezing monkey, a beautiful but venomous jellyfish, an underworld worm and a fungus named for a popular TV cartoon character. The top 10 new species also include a night-blooming orchid, an ancient walking cactus creature and a tiny wasp. Rounding out this year's list are a vibrant poppy, a giant millipede and a blue tarantula.
"The top 10 is intended to bring attention to the biodiversity crisis and the unsung species explorers and museums who continue a 250-year tradition of discovering and describing the millions of kinds of plants, animals and microbes with whom we share this planet," said Quentin Wheeler, an entomologist who directs the International Institute for Species Exploration at ASU.
Members of the international committee who made their selection from more than 200 nominations look for "species that capture our attention because they are unusual or because they have traits that are bizarre," said Mary Liz Jameson, an associate professor at Wichita State University who chaired the international selection committee. "Some of the new species have interesting names; some highlight what little we really know about our planet," she said.
Images and other information about the top 10 new species, including the explorers who made the discoveries and recorded them in calendar year 2011, are online at http://species.asu.edu. Also at the site is a Google world map that pinpoints the location for each of the top 10 new species. This year's top 10 come from Brazil, Myanmar, the Dutch Caribbean, South Africa, Papua New Guinea, Spain, Borneo, Nepal, China and Tanzania.
Describing the discoveries
Sneezing monkey: Since 2000, the number of mammals discovered each year averages about 36. So it was nothing to sneeze at when a new primate came to the attention of scientists conducting a gibbon survey in the high mountains of Myanmar (formerly Burma). Rhinopithecus strykeri, named in honor of Jon Stryker, president and founder of the Arcus Foundation, is the first snub-nosed monkey to be reported from Myanmar and is believed to be critically endangered. It is distinctive for its mostly black fur and white beard and for sneezing when it rains. A video of this species in on YouTube at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d1VuRvRv_UU.
Bonaire banded box jelly: This strikingly beautiful yet venomous jellyfish looks like a box kite with colorful, long tails. The species name, Tamoya ohboya, was selected by a teacher as part of a citizen science project, assuming that people who are stung exclaim "Oh boy!" A video of the species, which has been spotted near the Dutch Caribbean island of Bonaire, is on YouTube at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PcraphPLAxY.
Devil's worm: Measuring about 0.5 millimeters (1/50 or 0.02 inches) these tiny nematodes are the deepest-living terrestrial multicellular organisms on the planet. They were discovered at a depth of 1.3 kilometers (8/10 mile) in a South African gold mine and given the name Halicephalobus mephisto in reference to the Faust legend of the devil because the new species is found at such a depth in the Earth's crust and has survived immense underground pressure as well as high temperatures (37 degrees Celsius or 98.6 degrees Fahrenheit). According to its discoverers, carbon dating indicated that the borehole water where this species lives had not been in contact with Earth's atmosphere for the last 4,000 to 6,000 years.
Night-blooming orchid: A slender night stalker is one way to describe this rare orchid from Papua New Guinea whose flowers open around 10 at night and close early the next morning. It was described by scientists from the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew and Leiden University, who named it Bulbophyllum nocturnum from the Latin word meaning "at night." It is believed to be the first night-blooming orchid recorded among the more than 25,000 known species of orchids.
Parasitic wasp: Ants beware! This new species of parasitic wasp cruises at just one centimeter (less than half an inch) above the ground in Madrid, Spain, in search of its target: ants. With a target in sight, the teensy wasp attacks from the air like a tiny dive bomber, depositing an egg in less than 1/20 of a second. A video of the wasp, named Kollasmosoma sentum, dropping an egg on its target is on YouTube at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bpMGhGMWaTA.
SpongeBob SquarePants mushroom: Named Spongiforma squarepantsii, after the cartoon character SpongeBob SquarePants, this new fungi species looks more like a sponge than a typical mushroom. One of its characteristics is that its fruiting body can be squeezed like a sponge and bounce back to its normal size and shape. This fungus, which smells fruity, was discovered in forests on the island of Borneo in Malaysia.
Nepalese autumn poppy: This vibrant, tall, yellow poppy found in Nepal may have gone undescribed because of its high mountain habitat (10,827 to 13,780 feet). Named Meconopsis autumnalis for the autumn season when the plant flowers, there is evidence that this species was collected before but not recognized as new until intrepid botanists collecting plants miles from human habitation in heavy monsoon rains made the "rediscovery."
Giant millipede: A giant millipede about the length of a sausage bears the common name "wandering leg sausage," which also is at the root of its Latin name: Crurifarcimen vagans. The species holds a new record as the largest millipede (16 centimeters or about 6.3 inches) found in one of the world's biodiversity hotspots, Tanzania's Eastern Arc Mountains. The new species is about 1.5 centimeter (0.6 inch) in diameter with 56 more or less podous rings, or body segments bearing ambulatory limbs, each with two pairs of legs.
Walking cactus (lobopod fossil): Although this new species looks more like a "walking cactus" than an animal at first glance, Diania cactiformis belongs to an extinct group called the armoured Lobopodia, which had wormlike bodies and multiple pairs of legs. The fossil was discovered in Cambrian deposits about 520 million years old from southwestern China and is remarkable in its segmented legs that may indicate a common ancestry with arthropods, including insects and spiders.
Sazima's tarantula: Breathtakingly beautiful, this iridescent hairy blue tarantula is the first new animal species from Brazil to be named on the top 10 list. Pterinopelma sazimai is not the first or only blue tarantula but truly spectacular and from "island" ecosystems on flattop mountains.
Why a top 10 new species list?
"The more species we discover, the more amazing the biosphere proves to be, and the better prepared we are to face whatever environmental challenges lie ahead," said the institute's Wheeler, who also is a professor in ASU's School of Sustainability and its School of Life Sciences.
"It is impossible to do justice to the species discoveries made each year by singling out just 10. Imagine being handed 18,000 newly published books packed with fantastic information and stories and before having the opportunity to read them, being asked to pick the best 10," Wheeler said. "With the help of an international committee of experts we do the best we can by picking those with flashy jackets, surprising titles and unexpected plot lines in an effort to draw attention to the whole lot.
"There are many reasons to discover and describe species, and draw attention to this work. Perhaps most obvious is environmental: Unless we know what species exist to begin with, we are powerless to detect, track or mitigate losses of biodiversity," said Wheeler. "Another is biomimetics, turning to species for clues about new and sustainable ways to meet our needs for survival, materials and designs. There is also an intergenerational ethical imperative for species exploration. Because human population levels and activities are driving extinctions, we owe to humans who follow to explore and document our flora and fauna.
"Each species provides a unique chapter in the history of life and unless we discover them now, we stand to lose an enormous amount of irreplaceable evidence about our own origins and relatives," said Wheeler, who is one of an international group of 39 scientists, scholars and engineers who provided a detailed plan in the March 30 issue of the journal Systematics and Biodiversity to chart 10 million species in less than 50 years, and called it a necessary step to sustain the planet's biodiversity.
Marking the May 23 birth of Linnaeus
The annual top 10 new species announcement commemorates the anniversary of the birth of Carolus Linnaeus, who initiated the modern system of plant and animal names and classifications. The 300th anniversary of his birth on May 23 was celebrated worldwide in 2007.
Since Linnaeus initiated the modern systems for naming plants and animals in the 18th century, nearly 2 million species have been named, described and classified. Scientists estimate there are between 8 million and 100 million species on Earth, though most set the number between 8 million to 12 million.
The list of the top 10 new species is issued annually by ASU's International Institute for Species Exploration as part of its public awareness campaign to shine attention on biodiversity and the field of taxonomy. Previous top 10 lists are online at http://species.asu.edu.
Taxon experts pick top 10
"The top 10 new species is all about exploration and discovery," said committee chair Jameson, "and learning more about our planet. Lewis and Clark's discoveries included the pronghorn antelope, prairie dog and prairie rose 250 species altogether. But our job is far from over. We need the help of citizens and scientists alike to meet this grand challenge."
Nominations for this year's top 10 list were invited through the species.asu.edu website and also generated by institute staff and committee members.
"We had well over 200 new species nominated this year, and from those, we picked some fascinating "critters," said Jameson.
"Members on the committee come from many places around the world and from many backgrounds, so we bring our own biases to the process; some of us like photosynthesizers, some like predators, some like ocean dwelling critters," she said.
"Committee members had complete freedom in making their choices and developing their own criteria, from unique attributes or surprising facts about the species to peculiar names," Wheeler noted. "I deeply appreciate the taxon experts who gave their knowledge and time to select this year's top 10. By sharing their passion for exploring the biosphere and discovering species, they spread the recognition and appreciation of the critical roles played by taxonomy, botanical gardens and natural history museums in biodiversity exploration and conservation."
