Student loan debt nearly doubles in last five years, report says

Student loan debt has nearly doubled in the last five years, posing a potential risk to the economy, according to a new report from Congress.

The information, released Tuesday by the Joint Economic Committee, found that student loans increased from $550 billion in late 2007 to just under $1 trillion in the first quarter of 2013.

Two-thirds of recent graduates have student loans, with an average balance of more than $27,000.

New borrowers could face additional costs in their higher education pursuits unless Congress acts to keep interest rates for federally subsidized Stafford loans from doubling from 3.4% to 6.8% for new loans starting July 1, the report said.

For students borrowing the maximum amount of these loans, this would increase the cost of their college education by $4,500.

"Allowing the interest rate on subsidized Stafford loans to double at a time when the government?s cost of borrowing is so low undermines the public policy objective of providing affordable loans to students," according to the report, released by Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.), vice chair of the congressional committee.

QUIZ: How much do you know about sequestration?

The rise in the amount of student loans could harm the economy because individuals who shoulder heavier debts could delay purchasing a home, car and saving for retirement, the report said.

On average, recent graduates left college with a student loan debt of 60% of their annual income.

Iran wins at S.Korea, both teams qualify for WCup

ULSAN, South Korea (AP) -Iran beat South Korea 1-0 on Tuesday in a match that secured both teams a spot at next year's World Cup, though the Asian hosts only just scraped through and had to wait until after the final whistle to know their fate.

Iran finished top of Group A in the final stage of Asian qualifying, with South Korea in second place - level on points with Uzbekistan but ahead on goal difference.

Uzbekistan came from behind to win 5-1 at home against Qatar. However, the storming finish ultimately came up just short, leaving the Uzbeks with a goal difference of plus-five and South Korea on plus-six.

Iran's winner came in the 60th minute, when Kim Young-gwon failed to clear a speculative ball forward down Iran's right wing. Reza Ghoochannejad robbed him of possession, sprinted clear and sent a curling left-foot shot beyond goalkeeper Jung Sung-ryeong.

South Korea, not wanting to put its fate in the hands of the game in Uzbekistan, pressed forward for the remainder of the game but failed to find an equalizer.

Kim almost made up for his mistake, but his close-range shot in the 86th minute produced a reflex save from keeper Rahman Ahmadi and Jang Hyun-soo's follow-up effort was also blocked.

"My team played with a realistic approach, to try and wait for a weak point in the Korean team and with a counter-attacking attitude," Iran coach Carlos Queiroz said.

"The goal came in one of those situations and fortunately, when Korea created opportunities, our players fought for our lives. The team played with fantastic team spirit with great practical discipline and enormous determination."

The win set off celebrations across Iran, where the government had given a rare approval for supporters to spill into the streets. Outgoing president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and president-elect Hasan Rowhani in separate messages congratulated the team for reaching the World Cup.

As Iran players and officials celebrated wildly on the pitch, the South Korean squad and fans were kept in suspense while the last couple of minutes of the Uzbekistan game were played out, before they knew they were also through to next year's tournament in Brazil.

"We qualified but didn't finish with a satisfactory result," said outgoing coach Choi Kang-hee. "Today was a disappointing defeat but the players gave their best and I wish them luck in Brazil."

South Korea, missing a number of European-based stars, dominated the first half and despite going close through Son Heung-min and Lee Myung-joo, were unable to break down a well-drilled Iranian backline.

Son, who recently joined German team Bayer Leverkusen for 10 million euros, shot over from close range while Lee broke free of the Iran defenders but was unable to dribble around the goalkeeper.

After Iran's successful smash-and-grab goal in the 60th, South Korea's players were made aware Uzbekistan was rapidly closing the goal-difference gap, so pushed forward relentlessly in search of an equalizer.

Though it never came, South Korea had done enough in earlier games to secure an eighth-straight World Cup appearance.

Iran's berth in Brazil will be its fourth appearance at football's main event, having last reached the final tournament in Germany in 2006.

Review finds reporting bias in studies paid for by product manufacturer, with underreported harms

PORTLAND, Ore. An analysis by the Evidence-based Practice Center at Oregon Health & Science University has found that previously published clinical trial studies about a controversial bone growth product used in spinal surgeries overstated the product's effectiveness.

The OHSU analysis found the product offered no real benefit over bone grafts traditionally used in such surgeries and also found that previous studies had underreported harms that occurred in the studies. All but one of those studies were funded by the product's manufacturer, Medtronic.

The OHSU review is one of two independent reviews of the Medtronic product that will be published in the June 18 edition of the Annals of Internal Medicine. The other independent review, performed by a university in Great Britain, also found that the product offered little benefit over bone grafts and came with potential harms.

The bone growth product called recombinant human bone morphogenetic protein-2, or rhBMP-2 is used in spinal fusion surgeries, where vertebrae in the back are permanently joined together to eliminate pain or correct a deformity.

But rhBMP-2 has been at the center of controversy in recent years. Questions have been raised in major newspapers and a major medical journal about the product's safety and efficacy. A panel of experts writing in the summer 2011 edition of The Spine Journal found that study authors with financial ties to Medtronic reported many times fewer complications with the product than were found in Food and Drug Administration reports.

In late 2011, OHSU became part of a novel independent study on the patient data associated with the product. The Yale University Open Data Access Project, or YODA, chose OHSU's Evidence-based Practice Center and another group at the University of York in Great Britain to conduct systematic reviews and reanalyze the data associated with the use of the product in spine fusion. Medtronic supplied patient level data for the reviews and paid for the YODA-coordinated re-examination of the data. The independent reviews made up the first initiative of the YODA project. The project seeks to address the problem of unpublished and selectively published clinical evidence.

Each team analyzed the data independently. Neither team knew of the other team's findings until both manuscripts were accepted for the June 18 publication.

In their review, OHSU researchers found "no evidence that rhBMP-2 is more effective" than the bone grafts often used in spinal fusion surgery. The review also found that at 24 months after surgery, rhBMP-2 was associated with an increased risk for cancer, though the overall cancer risk was low.

The review also found "substantial evidence of reporting bias" in the previous studies on the product. The review found that Medtronic-sponsored publications analyzed or reported results in biased ways to indicate that it was more effective. The OHSU review also found higher rates of adverse events in patients, both with and without the use of rhBMP-2, compared with the published studies.

"Based on our analysis, it is difficult for us to find a clear indication to use rhBMP-2 for spinal fusion surgeries," said Rongwei Fu, Ph.D., an associate professor of public health and preventive medicine at OHSU and the lead author on the OHSU review.

OHSU's evidence-based practice center was the Oregon Evidence-based Practice Center when it was chosen to conduct the analysis of the Medtronic product in 2011. The center was renamed the Pacific Northwest Evidence-based Practice Center in August 2012.

In an article accompanying the publication of the reviews, Christine Laine, M.D., M.P.H., editor-in-chief of the Annals of Internal Medicine, wrote that the fact that two independent groups armed with the same patient data arrived at essentially the same conclusions should temper enthusiasm for the Medtronic product. She wrote that beyond replicating results, the independent reviews demonstrated additional value in having different scientists tackle the same data. The YODA project "is a novel exercise that illustrates the value of evidence synthesis, data sharing, peer review and editing, and reproducible research in helping us get closer to the truth," she wrote.

Pope blesses hundreds of Harley-Davidsons

VATICAN CITY (AP) ? Biker culture came to the Vatican on Sunday as Pope Francis blessed thousands of Harley-Davidsons and their riders celebrating the manufacturer's 110th anniversary with a loud parade and plenty of leather.

Thundering Harley engines nearly drowned out the Latin recitation of the "Our Father" prayer that accompanied Francis as he greeted the crowd before Mass. Standing in his open-top jeep, Francis drove up the main boulevard leading to St. Peter's Square, blessing the thousands of people in what was a giant Harley parking lot.

Once the service got under way, bikers in their trademark leather Harley vests sat in the square alongside nuns and tens of thousands of faithful Catholics taking part in an unrelated, two-day pro-life rally.

Francis addressed them both afterward, giving a blessing to the "numerous participants" of the Harley gathering.

Tens of thousands of Harley owners from around the world descended on Rome for the four-day anniversary of the American manufacturer.

The main events were Sunday's Vatican blessing and a parade Saturday past the Colosseum and other historic landmarks ? adding color, traffic and noise to an already colorful day in downtown Rome, thanks to a gay pride march.

Italian daily Corriere della Sera reported that six bikes were involved in a pileup Saturday on the main ring road around the capital, while a Swiss biking couple were killed in a highway crash on Wednesday.

Earlier in the week, Milwaukee, Wisconsin-based, Harley gave Francis two white classic Harleys for the Vatican police force to use.

There was something a bit incongruous about the Harley crowd ? known for its "Freedom" motto, outlaw image and adventuresome spirit ? taking part in a solemn papal Mass to commemorate a 1995 encyclical on the inviolability of human life.

"Evangelium Vitae" is a roadmap of the church's teaching against abortion, euthanasia and murder. Harley's advertising for its 2013 bike collection reads "Live life on your own terms. More than 30 ways to defy the status quo."

The Rev. Federico Lombardi, the Vatican spokesman, noted that there were probably quite a few Catholic riders in the crowd and that regardless, anyone is welcome to a papal Mass.

"I know great people who have big bikes," Lombardi quipped.

In his comments to the pro-life crowd, Francis offered prayers "for every human life, especially the most fragile, defenseless and threatened." But he stayed away from saying anything more polarizing about abortion or contraception.

He then spent a good half-hour after the Mass caressing, kissing and chatting with a few dozen sick or disabled people in the square, including one on a motorcycle wearing Harley garb.

G-8 security: Northern Ireland's biggest ever police ... - World News

As Obama heads to Northern Ireland for the G-8 summit, so will thousands of anti-capitalist demonstrators, posing a challenge for police used to high security. NBC's Keir Simmons reports.

By Keir Simmons and Sarah Burke, NBC News

ENNISKILLEN, Northern Ireland ? As President Barack Obama heads to Northern Ireland for Monday?s G-8 summit, so too will thousands of anti-capitalist demonstrators, posing a challenge for police even in an area used to high security.

Over 5,000 are expected to attend a union-organized anti-G-8 rally in Belfast on Saturday, and hundreds more have pledged to march from the host town, Enniskillen, to the security cordon surrounding the Lough Erne golf resort where world leaders will meet.

Protests are part and parcel of global summits, particularly since the 1999 World Trade Organization Ministerial meeting that saw days of serious violence on the streets of Seattle.

There are fears that anarchist groups could infiltrate the protests, as they did during the G-20 in Canada three years ago, where the streets of Toronto saw clashes between demonstrators and police.

Protesters have already been out on the streets of London, where 57 were arrested after running battles with police on?Tuesday.

Amid this backdrop, Northern Ireland is mounting the biggest police operation in its history, with 8,000 officers on duty each day of the event, 3,600 of whom have traveled across from mainland Britain. The Irish government will also be deploying 900 police to the nearby border, according to Channel 4 News.

Officers have received training in the deployment of water cannons in the event that protests escalate.

They are aided by the local territory. The small, rural border town of Enniskillen has a population of only 15,000 and the spectacular hotel venue is away from the center, surrounded on three sides by the waters of Lough Erne, providing a natural defense.

Andy Rain / EPA

Riot police clash with demonstrators during anti G-8 protests in London, Tuesday.

?We?re not a bunch of low-lifes that are wanting to protest for the sake of protesting,? said Frank Duffy, one of the organizers of Monday?s ?G-8 Not Welcome? march that includes environmentalists, anti-capitalists, trade unionists and peace campaigners as well as political activists from the republican and socialist movements in Northern Ireland.

?We are a broad-based community group. We want a peaceful dignified protest. We don?t want people to come here and cause trouble.?

Chief Constable Matt Baggott of the Police Service of Northern Ireland, assured reporters last week that the freedom to demonstrate would be respected.

?The right to assemble and the right to protest is ingrained in the way we do business and we have been used to this for many years,? he said. ?Every facility will be made for people who want to demonstrate lawfully and peacefully in Northern Ireland, but clearly we will be prepared for every eventuality.?

One major complication is the threat from dissident Irish republican groups, who are still active despite the 2005 Irish Republican Army ceasefire secured after two decades of peace talks.

Paul Mcerlane / EPA

Police Service of Northern Ireland patrol Lough Erne on June 9. The body of water surrounds on three sides the golf resort in Enniskillen, Northern Ireland, where the G-8 Summit will be held.

In this instance it is police and the military that are under threat, rather than world leaders, as many Irish nationalists view them as occupying forces. Counter-terror officers will be key to thwarting any attack.

"This [threat] is aimed at essentially the security services in Northern Ireland...the police service and my colleagues who are seen as a ?way of achieving ambitions," Baggot said.

Enniskillen was the scene of one of the darkest atrocities of "The Troubles" between Protestants and Loyalists supporting British rule and Catholics and Irish nationalists seeking a united Ireland.

Anger at the presence of British soldiers in Northern Ireland lay behind the 1987 bomb attack on a Remembrance Day ceremony ? equivalent to Memorial Day in the United States ? that killed 11 people and wounded 68 others.

?Dissident republicans are a bit of a sad reality and background of our day to day business,? said PSNI Assistant Chief Constable Alistair Finlay. ?We will probably see a number of different events, hoaxes, potential attacks on police officers. Those could well happen during the period of the summit but not near to the summit, more likely in some other parts of Northern Ireland.?

Protesters have voiced concerns about the scale of the police operation.

??We?re going to let our local issues be heard, but the police are obviously anticipating a worst-case scenario,?said Donal O?Cofaigh, another organizer of the ?G-8 Not Welcome? demonstrations. ?We are slightly concerned about the scale of the policing response, but we?re working with them locally and hoping that we can take it forward in an entirely peaceful manner.?

Although the police presence is large, it represents a shift away from decades of heavy involvement by the British army, which has been at the forefront of security in Northern Ireland since the early 1970s.

Peter Morrison / AP

The Lough Erne Golf Resort, Enniskillen, Northern Ireland, which is surrounded by water is due to host the G-8 summit.

?Northern Ireland is a very different place than when it was 10 or 20 years ago,? said Baggot. ?We are the authority?we are the police, and the support from our military colleagues is logistical or very technical. So the military will not be involved in dealing with protests or issues such as security.?

Local residents and businesses have already made their own plans. In Belfast, shops, restaurants and multi-national banks are expected to close or shutter their fronts in case violence flares, the Belfast Telegraph reported. Plastic sheeting has already been placed over stained glass windows at Belfast City Hall where marchers will converge on Saturday.

Queen's University has said it plans to close all of its buildings over the extended weekend amid fears they could be targeted by militants.

The authorities remained upbeat.?

?I am confident we have the right people, with the right skills, who can deliver this safely,? said Finlay.

NBC?s Michele Neubert, Alastair Jamieson and Richard O?Kelly contributed to this report.

Paul McCartney carries the weight at Bonnaroo

MANCHESTER, Tennessee (AP) ? Even a former Beatle needs a moment standing on the main stage at Bonnaroo.

A few songs into his transcendent first set at the massive Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival, Paul McCartney wrapped his arms around his signature Hofner bass and surveyed a crowd of 80,000 adoring fans.

"Hey, listen, I'm going to take a moment just to drink all this in for myself," McCartney said.

McCartney is one of the world's most recognizable musicians and showed why as he led a massive 2?-hour sing-a-long of three dozen songs that included two encores Friday night.

Playing for a crowd consisting mostly of fans who were born a decade or more after the Beatles broke up in 1971, he lavishly revisited the Beatles, Wings and his own solo catalog, laying down hit after hit and playing two Beatles cuts he only recently began playing live for the first time ? "Lovely Rita" and "Mr. Mustard."

McCartney, who turns 71 next week, acknowledged some cultural similarities between the generations, however.

"That's some pretty good weed I can smell," McCartney said as wispy puffs of smoke rose from hundreds of spots in the crowd. "What are you doing to me?"

McCartney took the time to talk about several songs, explaining his Beatles classic "Blackbird" was written about the civil rights struggle in Arkansas.

He noted songs he wrote for his wives over the years, took a moment to express support for incarcerated Russian punk rock band Pussy Riot after playing "Back in the USSR" and told a humorous story about Jimi Hendrix and Eric Clapton.

He also paid tribute to late Beatles members John Lennon and George Harrison. Drummer Ringo Starr and McCartney are the only surviving members of the genre-defining British rock band.

McCartney kicked off Harrison's biggest hit "Something" on the ukulele, playing in an unfamiliar time signature that gave the song new meaning, before strapping on a guitar to finish the song. And he played "Here Today" for his old songwriting partner Lennon, a song he wrote after Lennon was shot to death in 1980.

McCartney warned members of the crowd to never hold back their feelings, as he did with Lennon after the group broke up.

"That's it," McCartney said after finishing the song on a baby grand piano. "If you wait to tell someone you love them, it's too late."

The set only seemed to pick up speed as the night edged toward midnight. With the crowd yet to diminish, he played "Live and Let Die" accented by onstage pyrotechnics and fireworks.

The entire crowd joined in on "Hey, Jude" before McCartney and his four-piece band left the stage. He returned waving a Tennessee state flag and played a three-song encore that included "Day Tripper" and "Get Back."

He returned for a second encore that included a rollicking version of "Helter Skelter." A member of the crowd tossed McCartney a stuffed toy walrus, alluding to a cryptic nickname given to him by Lennon, and McCartney concluded his first show at Bonnaroo by singing "Carry That Weight" to the toy he placed atop his piano.

T-Mobile says MetroPCS' network transition is ahead of schedule

TMobile says MetroPCS' network switch is ahead of schedule

T-Mobile is more than a little eager to justify its acquisition of MetroPCS. To its relief, there's early evidence that the money was well spent: it says that MetroPCS' switch to a blend of HSPA+ and LTE is ahead of schedule, and it cites the just-started Bring Your Own Phone program as proof. The bigger carrier is already planning to expand MetroPCS' device mix, too. In addition to the recent launches of the Galaxy Exhibit and Optimus L9, T-Mobile's refreshed Galaxy S III is due on June 17th. We won't declare the transition a resounding success just yet, however -- when T-Mobile only expects to finish converting MetroPCS customers by 2015, there's still a lot of ground left to cover.

Readers Respond to "The Myth of Antioxidants"

Cover Image: June 2013 Scientific American MagazineSee Inside

Letters to the editor from the February 2013 issue of Scientific American

ANTIOXIDANTS AND HEALTH

Although I would not go so far as to say Melinda Wenner Moyer's ?The Myth of Antioxidants? established ?myth? status for antioxidants, it was an eye-opening account of recent experimental evidence demonstrating that an increase in free radical levels in living systems does not consistently correlate with shorter life spans and that the aging process contains more uncharted territory than initially believed. More important, however, no reader should come away feeling that vitamins from food products are in any way overrated or are ?killers.?

The studies that are mentioned in the article repeatedly made use of unnatural (and often unmeasured) vitamin sources, which of course will have the potential to do more harm than good to an organism. As a chemist in the pharmaceutical industry, I can state with considerable certainty that a drug product's formulation, inert substances and potency are equally as critical to its overall safety and efficacy as the active pharmaceutical ingredient, per se.

Case in point, a broccoli floret is a presentation of vitamin C and beta-carotene that the body digests and systemically disperses in a manner more natural and evolved than that of the exact same vitamins presented in tablets and capsules. Ingestion of supplements charges the body with concentrated vitamin doses lacking the beneficial delivery components that broccoli and other vegetables provide in well-received quantities. The generation and buildup of harmful oxidants is thus more likely to occur.

This may seem like a roundabout way of stating the obvious: a diet including foods rich in vitamins and other antioxidants is more beneficial than the routine consumption of vitamin supplements.

John J. Walsh
Cleveland

The article states that roundworms genetically engineered to not produce naturally occurring antioxidants lived as long as worms that produced them, implying that antioxidants are worthless at best. Yet length of life is not the only criterion we should go by. If it were, then you could say that my father-in-law, who never took antioxidants and subsisted almost entirely on candy bars, lived a good life. In fact, he lived to the same age as Jack LaLanne (97). But LaLanne was fit, active and in command of his faculties at the end of his life, whereas my father-in-law spent his declining years in a long, slow descent into the abyss of dementia.

Wenner Moyer correctly points out that some studies of the effects of high doses of antioxidant supplements such as beta-carotene or vitamin E have found that they are associated with increased mortality. She fails to mention, however, that those studies were inspired by many others showing that higher levels of such dietary antioxidants in the blood are strongly linked with lower overall mortality and lower death rates from cancer and cardiovascular disease. This is particularly true of the carotenoids, the family of antioxidants related to vitamin A.

Because humans lack the ability to synthesize carotenoids, those measured in the blood must come from diet?especially from fruits and vegetables. Thus, it appears that antioxidant carotenoids derived from natural sources in diet do increase life span, whereas individual carotenoids given in high doses do not.

?THE LEFT? AND SCIENCE

Michael Shermer appears to be reaching in his Skeptic column this month [?The Left's War on Science?]. He says that ?there is more, and recent, antiscience fare from far-left progressives,? yet his examples aren't antiscience at all. ?Liberals tend to be antinuclear because of the waste-disposal problem,? he says. So are most people?that's why Yucca Mountain hasn't been approved as a repository. ?Anti?fossil fuels because of global warming.? Global warming is occurring, in large part, because of fossil fuels. ?Antihydroelectric because dams disrupt river ecosystems.? Well, yes, they do (ask any ichthyologist how North American native fishes are doing; ask coastal cities why they are running out of beach sand). ?Anti?wind power because of avian fatalities.? Again, is this antiscience? No, birds do die in wind turbines (and because of other unnatural structures like mirrored skyscrapers).

Squalicum's Flint brings the wow factor to throwing events | Prep ...

It was about the time of the afternoon when minds wander and parents start trying to track down young kids that have been running wild all day for the drive home after a lengthy final day of the State Track and Field Championships. But the announcement of the final results of the Class 2A girls' discus results made just about everybody in the packed stands at Mount Tahoma High School snap attention to the awards stand and utter a collective, "Wow!"

Squalicum senior Gina Flint had just broken the five-year-old state meet record in the event by 15 feet.

Though the University of Washington-bound thrower wowed the crowd and claimed her second straight state title in the event with her throw of 161-11, it was a little more than 6 feet short of her personal best of 168-0.

In other words, it was just another day at the office for Flint, who has been selected The Bellingham Herald's All-Whatcom County Girls' Track and Field Athlete of the Year after she also won a second straight state title and broke another five-year-old state meet record in the shot put - this time by "only" a little more than 21/2 feet with her throw of 47-63/4.

"There have been so many great moments with Gina the last four years, but I think the first wow moment I had with her was her freshman year when she PRed by 10 feet in the discus while standing in a couple of inches of rain water," Squalicum throws coach Chris Benson said in a phone interview. "That was probably as excited as I have been, because that's not easy to do. She started early, and she's made me continue to say 'Wow.'"

Probably never more than in 2013, when Flint not only won every time she threw - 13 for 13 in the shot put and 13 for 13 in the discus - she dominated every time out.

She threw her best at the 2A District 1/2 Meet at Civic Stadium, when she not only threw the 168-0 in the discus, but also a personal-best 48-21/2 in the shot put. Both were the best girls' marks in the state this year - the discus by 211/2 feet - and ranked her seventh nationally in the shot put and third in the nation in the discus. Her discus throw was the third-longest in state history and she tied for fifth-longest ever in the shot put.

"My discus throw that meet, it came off my hand and hadn't hit the ground yet, and I got chills," Flint said in a phone interview. "Then they measured it and it was a PR. It was so exciting."

Call that her wow moment.

Whatcom County has not seen a thrower as dominant as Flint since former Sehome great Steven Ayers graduated and went to play football at Washington State.

In fact Flint had to make her own competition, because she simply was throwing out of the zip code of everyone else at the meets she attended.

"I'm friends with some of the other top girls in the nation," she said. "We'd talk to each other, and let each other know what we were throwing. We kind of competed with each other, even though we weren't at the same meets. I'd always think about what I wanted to work on in my form and what changes needed to be made and push myself to make those changes."

Of course, Flint has been an expert at providing her own motivation over the years.

"Her ultimate goal this year was 185 feet in the discus and 50 feet in the shot," Benson said. "She didn't quite make it there, but she got pretty close. That's what she does, is she makes a goal and sticks to it and figures out a way to get there."

That sort of goal setting has allowed Flint to continually improve throughout her throwing career.

In the discus, she improved her personal best from 112-10 as a freshman to 113-7 as a sophomore, 153-4 as a junior and 168-0 as a senior. She saw similar growth in the shot put, moving from 35-103/4 as a freshman to 39-91/2 her sophomore year, 45-73/4 as a junior and 48-21/2 this year.

"You don't see that too often," Benson said. "Every year in the discus she went 20 feet, 20 feet, 15 feet progress. In the shot, she went 3 feet, 4 feet, 4 feet. That's pretty special, too. That's just attributed to all the hard work she put in."

Flint is not only a year-round regular in the weight room lifting with the boys, she also throws just about every day - rain or shine.

"A lot of my friends think I'm crazy throwing in the rain and cold," Flint said. "I even threw in the snow one time, and they thought I was nuts. But I want to work hard."

Flint's dedication isn't all that makes her a special thrower.

"She's got natural quickness and athleticism," Benson said. "That's a real plus. When she finds herself out of position in the discus, she's athletic enough to recover to get in position. She matches that with tremendous strength. She's not just the strongest girl on our team, she's the strongest on the track team - boy or girl. That, combined with her hard work in the weight room has made her who she is."

But Flint is much, much more than just a good thrower.

Anybody who has heard her sing the National Anthem before Squalicum football or basketball games knows that the standout student athlete has a lot more going for her.

"I know a lot of people come up to me and say they respect the way that I sing the National Anthem and that I sing it the way it should be sung," Flint said. "I know a lot of people do runs on notes and change it to fit their own style. My grandpa asked me to please sing it straight and sing it the way it's supposed to be, and I promised to do that. Sophomore year, I sang before a football game, and I had a retired vet come up and say I sang it beautifully and he liked that I sang it straight. It really made an impact on me."

The anthem is far from the only song in Flint repertoire.

She's been a member of the Squalicum Storm Singers, which meets at 6:30 a.m. for practice, and the school's Concert Choir, which is a class that meets during the day. In April she got to go with Squalicum's women's ensemble to Ellensburg to compete at state, where the team placed seventh. She also competed at state as an alto soloist.

In January, she auditioned for UW's completive voice team - a team that usually doesn't allow freshman. Instead, Flint said she plans to sing with the University Choir next year.

"I know my parents say that when I was little, I was singing all the time," Flint said. "In fifth grade, I decided I wanted to do strings before school, and I played the violin in the fifth grade orchestra. ... I really enjoy music. When I don't have anything else to do, I can just come home and play guitar or the piano or sing. It's something I've loved for a long time."

It's also something Flint said she loves to do with her older sister Kyann, who Flint said suffers from a form of Muscular Dystrophy.

Kyann is a regular at track meets, though, as she can routinely be seen there taking pictures, Flint said.

"We're like any sisters," Flint said. "Sometimes we fight, but we like to hang out and go shopping. She's always been such a huge supporter of what I do. She's always there when I'm competing in music or track, or even when I played basketball. I think she's always pushing me to go harder."

In fact, track is kind of a family affair in the Flint household, with Gina's and Kyann's father, Ted, the sprints coach at Squalicum, and the family has been regulars at Bellingham Parks and Recreation all-comers meets since Flint was 5 and tried to compete in as many different events as she possibly could.

"It's been nice knowing my dad was there," Flint said. "Even though he couldn't always watch me because I knew he had to coach, just having him there when I was competing and seeing him walk up and watch me, that was great. ... My sister takes the pictures and my mom does the scrap booking."

Just imagine what that scrapbook must look like after everything Flint accomplished this spring.

But it's not all the medals she won or the records she broke that Flint says she's going to remember from 2013.

"I just go out every time with the purpose to have fun and cheer on the other throwers and hope to throw a PR myself," Flint said. "The thing I'm going to remember most is the way everyone on the team would get closer and closer together as state approached. Even at midseason, it was like we were a giant family. Everyone knows everyone, and everyone cheers everyone on. That's what I'm going to remember."

First flight of Airbus A350 reopens wide-body race

PARIS (AP) ? The Airbus A350's maiden flight ended with a safe landing on Friday, setting the stage for intensifying competition with U.S. rival Boeing in the long-haul wide-body aircraft market.

The four-hour flight from Toulouse marks a key step on the path to full certification for the jet, which can carry between 250 and 400 passengers and is the European aircraft maker's best hope for catching up in a long-haul market dominated by Boeing's 787 and 777. Toulouse airspace closed for both take-off and landing.

Airbus has 613 orders for the A350, and hopes Friday's flight will bring it momentum heading into next week's Paris Air Show, which is already shaping up as a battle of the wide-body planes.

More than half of the twin-engine jet consists of lightweight carbon-fiber designed to save on jet fuel, which makes up half the cost of long-haul flights.

The A350, which was delayed for two years as Airbus hashed out the new design, is a direct competitor with the 787 Dreamliner ? minus the lithium ion batteries now under investigation for unexplained smoldering. Airbus abandoned its plans to use the lithium ion batteries despite their advantages in weight, power and re-charging speed.

"The A350 has the same innovations more or less as the Dreamliner, the 787," said Gerard Feldzer, a French aviation expert and former airline pilot. "It is pretty much equivalent, the same amount or proportion of carbon for the lightness of the material, just as many electrical devices."

Boeing's list prices for its 787 line range from $206 million to $243 million. Airbus lists prices ranging from $254 million to $332 million, and had 613 orders as of May, compared with 890 orders for the 787. Steep discounts are common on large orders, although the details are rarely made public.

Airbus claims the A350 burns 25 percent less fuel than the Boeing due to its lighter weight, redesigned Rolls Royce engines and new aerodynamics.

"The first flight is a very special moment in an aerospace company," Tom Enders, CEO of Airbus parent company EADS, said late Thursday.

Daniel Pena: The Enigmatic Kawhi Leonard

The old adage goes that player's names are made and solidified in the NBA Finals. Such can be seen in the media frenzy surrounding the unlikely rise of Gary Neal and Danny Green whose combined 51 points in Game 3 against the Heat led to a massive 113-77 rout. In the post-game conference, when asked about how he was so capable of containing the league's MVP, LeBron James, and holding him to just fifteen points, the notoriously dry Popovich refused to answer the question and with good reason. If it's true that names can be made in the playoffs, it is also true that names can be broken or at least tarnished. Coach Popovich hinted at as much in fielding questions on LeBron James' lackluster performance against the Spurs in Game 1. When asked to remark on James' performance in Game 3 and what he thought James could do better, Coach Popovich dryly remarked, "He's a grown man. He doesn't you to tell him anything. He knows more than all of you put together." Thus far, the conversation surrounding Miami's performance in the Finals centers on the singular narrative of what LeBron James can do better. Perhaps, the better question to ask is, "What is Kawhi Leonard doing right?"

With only 11 points and 1.7 assists averaged throughout this series, it might seem at first glance that Leonard is a minor role-player, an afterthought, a whistle in the riptide wind that is the Spurs' performance in this series. Indeed, he very well might be to the casual observer, but only because the narrative surrounding LeBron's fall from MVP grace is a much more enticing narrative to follow than the story of a rising small forward's ability to contain the so-called greatest contemporary player in the world. You only need to look as far as Leonard's averages of 12 rebounds, two steals, and myriad of forced turnovers to see that Popovich's control over the Heat relies as much on Kawhi Leonard as it does on the offensive spark of the rest of his team.

Much of Miami's trouble in this series has come from their inability to get to the free-throw line as well as their inability, with the exception of Chris Anderson, to score points inside the paint. Leonard's defense of James has been brilliant, seldom allowing the 75.3% free throw shooter to get to the line while somehow managing to disallow him to score on the post, instead forcing James to kick the ball out, ad nauseum, to players who can't seem to convert on the assist. Mario Chalmers played the entirety of Game 3 without scoring any points. Dwayne Wade went seven for 15 from the field in that same game. Leonard's defense creates a conundrum for LeBron, daring him to shoot from mid-range or beyond the arc in order to score or facilitate as a passer, putting the ball into player's hands who might be willing but unable to score with the same potency as James can, though there's evidence James' potency is waning as well, scoring 7/21 in Game 1, 7/17 in Game 2, and 7/16 in Game 3.

There's another old adage that goes, "defensive players never get their due." Fair enough. Not that Leonard or Danny Green or Gary Neal are griping. Leonard, like Green and Neal, is unassuming, almost forgotten. Gregg Popovich knows this. The rest of the Spurs know this. And it's perhaps because of this, their almost banal presence, that the Heat defense (and in turn offense) have gone soft on these players, opting instead to double up on the likes of Tony Parker, Tim Duncan, and Tiago Splitter. For the Heat, players like Leonard are supposed to be nobodies. The Heat need for them to be nobodies if the stand a chance to win.

It's fair to say that Kawhi Leonard is in the running for Finals MVP should the Spurs win this series. Or at least he should be. He's done what many-a-coach have considered to be the impossible in controlling LeBron James. In turn he controls the Heat and propels the Spurs onward toward their fifth NBA championship. His name too will be forged in these Finals.

Pope wades diplomatically into gay marriage debate

VATICAN CITY (AP) ? Pope Francis waded diplomatically into the gay marriage debate Friday, telling the Archbishop of Canterbury he wants to work together to promote family values "based on marriage."

Francis, who vigorously opposed gay marriage in his native Argentina, and Archbishop Justin Welby chatted, prayed and had lunch together at the Vatican in their first encounter since both were installed in March.

Welby, the spiritual leader of the 77 million-strong Anglican Communion, has opposed legislation in Britain that would legalize gay marriage, saying it would undermine family life.

He appeared last week before the House of Lords before it moved the gay marriage bill a step closer to becoming law. The legislation would enable gay couples to get married in both civil and religious ceremonies in England and Wales.

In his remarks to Welby, Francis said he hoped they could collaborate in promoting the sacredness of life "and the stability of families founded on marriage." He noted that Welby had recently spoken out on the issue, a reference to his House of Lords testimony.

Significantly, though, Francis didn't say that marriage should be based on a union between a man and woman, which is how Benedict XVI and John Paul II routinely defined marriage.

Vatican officials said it was a diplomatic attempt to make his point without making a provocative pronouncement. Francis has steered clear of the gay marriage debate as it has recently roiled France and Britain, and in general has refrained from making headline-grabbing comments on hot-button current events.

As archbishop of Buenos Aires, however, the former Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio didn't shy away from voicing strong opposition to gay marriage, though he was pragmatic in sensing Argentina was heading in that direction.

Realizing the church couldn't win the fight outright, Bergoglio urged his fellow Argentine bishops to lobby for gay civil unions instead, according to the then-cardinal's authorized biographer. The bishops shot down the proposal and the church lost the issue altogether when the South American nation legalized gay marriage in 2010 ? the first country in the region to do so.

Bergoglio once called gay marriage an "anthropological step backward."

"If there's a private union, then third parties and society aren't affected," he wrote. "But if they're granted marriage rights and can adopt, there could be children affected. Every person needs a masculine father and a feminine mother to help them settle their identity."

How to tie your Apple ID to your Mac user account in OS X Mountain Lion

How to tie your Apple ID to your Mac user account in OS X Mountain Lion

In Mac OS X Mountain Lion, you can tie your actual Apple ID to your OS X user account fairly easily. In most cases, this will be your iCloud account. There are many good reasons to do this, but this biggest is that if you ever forget your desktop login password, you can reset it via your Apple ID leaving no need to use recovery mode to reset it.

Not sure how? Follow along and we'll show you.

  1. From the Apple menu in the upper left hand corner, click on System Preferences.
  2. Under the System section click on Users & Groups.
  3. If you have a passcode on your desktop, complete this step. Click on the lock in the lower left corner and enter your admin password in order to make changes to this menu.
  4. Now under the account you'd like to tie an Apple ID to, click on Set next to the Apple ID option.
  5. Finally, enter your iCloud ID or Apple ID and click OK.

That's it. Your Apple ID is now tied to your Mac user account. This means if you were to ever forget your desktop password, you can use your Apple ID to reset it. Just make sure the Allow user to reset password using Apple ID option box is checked like shown in the photo below.
