Your Small Business Needs an Online Presence | Business 2 ...

Yes, your business is small. Yes, your customer base is made up almost entirely of local patrons. And yes, you still need an online presence. Locals have the internet too, and they use it to research almost everything, from restaurants to professional services, big to tiny. In order to be as successful as you can, you must build your online brand.

Build Credibility and a Solid Reputation

There simply is no better vehicle for bolstering your reputation with prospective customers than a solid online presence ? even for a typical local business with a direct sales force. Let?s say you have a salesperson named Pete; I bet that one of his top business development activities is networking with other businesspeople. So, on any given day, Pete might network and meet 2-5 other businesspeople. I guarantee that once that face-to-face encounter is over, the people he met are visiting Pete?s company website and his LinkedIn page to verify that what Pete represented in person is congruent with reality. You see, reality today is your web presence. No one is going to take the time initially to visit your office or manufacturing facility to check for congruence. People are going to use their Smartphone, tablet, or PC to draw their conclusions about you and your firm.

Steele and Loeber, Chicago?s oldest and most respected garage building company, saw the direct results of creating a strong online brand. They are well known within their industry but people want to be able to see exactly what a company is about online before taking any action. My company, FetchLocalCustomers, performed a complete site redesign for Steele and Loeber to capture their brand identity and within the first 20 days of the new site going live, they received 15 new leads from the website!

Bring in Local Customers

Online commercial effectiveness, at its simplest, is a pretty straightforward concept. Consumers visit search engines when they have an unmet need, and begin searching for the products and services that they hope will meet that need. In order to be commercially effective, a company must place at the top of the search results for those phrases most frequently used by consumers in their market. We call these ?buying phrases? because we want our clients targeting those phrases that lead to commercial actions, as opposed to ?research phrases? that may have a high volume of traffic but low action-oriented intent. A good buying phrase would be ?painting contractors,? while a highly searched research phrase is ?painting ideas.? See the difference?

Another client, McAdoo Cosmetic Surgery, was able to save thousands of advertising dollars by utilizing smart search techniques online instead of the old-school Yellow Book ad approach. Their online search efforts provided the best return on their marketing investment, as online leads quickly became their biggest source of new patients.

But, ranking highly in search engines is simply not enough these days. You have to have a website that is professional, and designed to get your visitors to take the action you most desire. You need both traffic (visitors) and conversions (desired actions) to truly achieve a high degree of online commercial effectiveness.

Manage Your Online Reputation

Reputation management, of course, plays a role. Along the way, just like in the offline world, you are far more likely to receive feedback from the few customers that perceive they have had a negative experience than from the majority who have had a positive experience. Having a process in place to help your satisfied customers place positive reviews on the web is both the best way to build a positive online reputation and the surest way to rehabilitate a tarnished one.

The internet can also help build up a reputation in your respective industry. For example, your small business may have a huge following within your geographic area, but those potential clients outside of your area may have never heard of what you can provide. Why would they travel outside of their area for your services? That?s where a website comes in to build up your reputation within an industry. One of my clients, Jeffrey G. Bishop, previously relied on referral business for his executive coaching services. By developing his online brand and reputation in his industry, Bishop now receives new customers from outside his drivable territory. Developing referrals are still critical, but cultivating a solid online reputation just magnifies those efforts and results.

Enjoy the SEO and Traffic Benefits

This is an interesting situation and a bit of the classic chicken-and-egg story, since SEO, traffic, and online reputations are all interrelated.? In 2010, I developed a model I call ?online gravity? to help explain how and why building your online reputation is so important. Essentially, the model shows that your ability to pull in new customers online is a function of your businesses? online mass (amount of content) and how closely this mass relates to your desired target prospect (a function of search engine rankings for your site and distributed content).

Here?s how it plays out on a daily basis:

  • Authority sites have a large amount of content pages.
  • Authority sites have large numbers of link-backs from other sites.
  • Search engines value and highly rank authority sites.
  • Highly ranked authority sites get large amounts of traffic.

Therefore, taking steps to build a strong online reputation through content creation and content distribution helps build SEO and drive traffic. It?s a bit of a virtuous circle. It?s hard to build a strong online reputation without good SEO and content to start with, but once the reputation is built, the link-backs and traffic from your enhanced reputation further enhance search rankings and increase the online gravity of your brand even further. More online gravity pulls in more new customers.

As you can see, no matter the size of your company, from 5 employees to 5,000, you need an online presence. You need to create it, build it up, get your customers involved in enhancing it, and manage it every day. Remember: local customers have the internet, too!

Many Olympians Suffer From Asthma

Click here to listen to this podcast

Olympic athletes might appear to have the cardiovascular and respiratory systems of superheroes. But a new study reveals that one in 12 Olympic athletes uses asthma treatments. The findings are in the British Journal of Sports Medicine. [Kenneth Fitch, An Overview of Asthma and Airway Hyper-Responsiveness In Olympic Athletes]

That usage has jumped since the mid-?90s. So the International Olympic Committee now requires athletes to provide medical proof of an asthma diagnosis before allowing them to use an inhaler during the competition.

Both cold and polluted air increase the risk for asthma, affecting winter and summer athletes alike. Dangerous ozone and particulate matter are worse in warm weather, so athletes in the Summer Olympics are slightly more likely to suffer from asthma. Winter events, such as cross-country skiing, can also damage airways with cold air and ice particles.

But athletes with asthma have a better chance of winning?and not because the drugs enhance their performance. Asthma occurs more often in older endurance athletes, suggesting that years of intense training could be to blame for the condition?and to thank for the conditioning.

Outdoor Activities To Increase Your Fitness Levels | ArticlePDQ.com

If you want to increase your fitness level, you must make exercise a priority. You cannot relegate it to something you do when you have the time. Be sure to schedule your exercise time, and let others know that this is an important appointment for you, and you intend to keep it!

If you want to play a sport like tennis or racquetball, you will need to build up your forearm strength. To do this, you could lay a barbell on your arms and bring the weight up slightly and keep doing this until you feel the burn in your forearms.

When pursuing your fitness goals, you should always make sure that the bench is not too hard when performing bench presses. If the bench is too hard, it can cause T4 syndrome. This is when your thoracic spine becomes misaligned, and your arm is weakened. Therefore, before you lift, you should see if you can feel the wood of the bench by pressing your thumb on the bench. If you can, it is too hard.

A great fitness tip to build up your forearm muscles is to start doing wrist curls. Wrist curls are great because they don?t require much effort or very heavy weights. All you do to perform a wrist curl is to curl your wrists while holding a dumbbells.

Make sure that you stay properly hydrated during your workout. You need to keep replenishing all the water you are losing through sweat, especially if it is hot where you are exercising. Do not drink too much at once though or you could vomit it back up. Just take little sips to keep your body temperature cool and to replenish your fluids.

To lower your risk of osteoporosis, be sure to consume plenty of calcium. It?s commonly known that milk and other dairy products contain calcium, but this nutrient can be found in many other foods. Bok Choy, broccoli, and kelp are all very high in calcium. Sesame seeds are another great source.

Include all different kinds of exercise in your workout regime. You won?t get bored and you will be able to experience different ways to get fit that you may not have tried. Keep the most physically demanding workouts for when you feel at your best, and the most soothing workouts for times when you don?t feel like exercising at all.

If you are going to be lifting heavy free weights, then it is essential that you buy a good pair of exercise gloves. These are good for two reasons. They will help you to have a better grip on the bar, but more importantly, they will help you to avoid developing a callous.

Invest your time into blogs that are always changing to improve themselves. Write comments, and post as a guest) Putting up a link for a site that is PR2 that is always working to get better won?t take long to get to PR4 or even 5, and that will increase your back link.

Now that you have a greater understanding of ways to get fit and into shape, you can form your own unique strategy for success. What you have to remember though is that this isn?t everything there is to learn. There are more tips to build on your strategies for success, so always keep on the lookout for more information.

(AP) ? The greatest?

When it comes to Michael Phelps, the answer seems obvious with just a cursory glance of the medals table. The guy has won 15 golds ? "insane," says Serena Williams, who certainly knows a thing or two about winning ? and now he's got more total Olympic medals than anyone, with a few more races to extend the record into almost unfathomable territory before he's done in London.

Even President Barack Obama jumped on the bandwagon, phoning Phelps on Wednesday to congratulate him on his remarkable accomplishment.

"He's definitely the greatest Olympian of all time," said South African swimmer Chad le Clos, who's actually one of the few guys to have beaten Phelps at the Olympics. "He's my idol."

But the greatest?

That's where things get a bit dicier.

While the sporting world ? everyone from Masters champion Bubba Watson to Spanish soccer star Gerard Pique ? peppered Phelps with praise in the Twitter-verse after he earned the 19th medal of his career, no less an authority than Sebastian Coe was reticent to bestow the ultimate crown.

"My personal view is I'm not sure he's the greatest," Lord Coe said on Wednesday, speaking as a two-time gold medalist in athletics and the face of these games as head of the London organizing committee. "But he's certainly the most successful."

Other think the sheer magnitude of Phelps' accomplishments leave little doubt about his place in history.

"He's won more medals that any Olympian in history," said U.S. swimmer Tyler Clary. "That should speak for itself."

Indeed, the numbers are mind-boggling:

? Start with the golds. Phelps has six more than anyone else. If he wins his last three events in London, he'll have twice as many as anyone else.

? Soviet-era gymnast Larisa Latynina previously held the record for total medals, winning 18 over a span of three Olympics from 1956-64. From there, the dropoff is significant. Next on the list is another Soviet gymnast, Nikolai Andrianov, with 15 medals. Three others captured 13. Just 23 more ? in both Summer and Winter Games ? have as many as 10. If Phelps was a nation, he would be tied for 57th on the Summer Games medal list and closing in on India, the second-most populous nation on the globe.

? Phelps won the most gold medals at a single games, his eight-race sweep in Beijing four years ago. In retrospect, the Great Haul of China looks even more impressive. While it's said that every record is made to be broken, it's hard to see anyone topping that mark. Equaling it at best, and that will be tough enough.

Williams, who is competing in the Olympic tennis competition at Wimbledon, described Phelps as "the ultimate Olympian."

"I mean, who does that?" she asked. "No one else could do that. It's insane."

In London, Phelps has been a bit of letdown. He didn't even make the podium in his first race, laboring home fourth in the 400 individual medley, and he settled for the first two silvers of his career, including a shocking loss to le Clos in the 200 butterfly Tuesday. But he finally got his first gold of these games in the 4x200 freestyle relay, taking over with a big lead and cruising home while the roar inside the Olympic Aquatics Centre got louder with each powerful stroke.

Afterward, the announcer proclaimed him "a complete legend" while the Foo Fighters song "Best of You" blared from the speakers. Someone held up a bedsheet with the handwritten message "PHELPS GREATEST OLYMPIAN EVER."

That seemed to be the general sentiment around the Olympic city, a day after Phelps captured No. 19.

From the shooting range: "Yes, for me he is the greatest," said Chinese shooter Chen Ying, shortly after winning silver in women's 25-meter pistol. "Michael Phelps is a role model for all athletes in the world. In swimming, competition is like a battlefield. He inspires others to go for gold as well."

From the beach volleyball stadium: "For sure," Natacha Rigobert of Mauritius said, "because he won so many medals swimming for the USA and to keep doing good like this is amazing. I mean, nobody did that before. It's great."

From the world of athletics: "Once you do something that nobody has ever done before, it automatically puts you in that category," retired sprinter Maurice Greene said. "It's an arguable debate, but he has to be in the top."

Coe begs to disagree. Sort of.

"This is the great global pub game. Who is the greatest athlete of all time?" he said during his daily briefing. "Whether he's the greatest, I don't know. I could go around this whole room and we'd come up with different interpretations. You'd have to say he's up there. Is he the greatest? In my opinion, probably not. But my opinion means no more than anyone else's."

Coe was pressed for his choice. If not Phelps, who?

"I could throw out a whole series of names," Coe said. "I could throw out Steve Redgrave, Daley Thompson," a couple of home-country faves. "If I wanted to go back a few generations and recall what Jesse Owens did in 1936, it was unbelievable. Nadia Comaneci. I don't know. It's the great local pub game."

International Olympic Committee president Jacques Rogge also was hesitant to put Phelps above everyone else.

"Definitely one of the greatest," Rogge told The Associated Press. "You cannot reduce everything to the medals. What Larisa Latynina has done with 18 medals and Michael has done with 19 medals is unequaled and is probably going to stay like this for decades to come. But there are other issues that both have. Personality. Larisa is a wonderful personality. Michael is a wonderful personality. There are great iconic athletes who have not won that many medals, but definitely it is a landmark."

Rogge, too, was pushed to name others he would put alongside Phelps.

"I'm not going to make an exhaustive list," he replied, "but there are legendary athletes like Paavo Nurmi, Carl Lewis and Jesse Owens and many more that are really idols and icons of the sport."

Indeed, it's worth noting that Phelps participates in a sport where it's possible to win multiple events at a single games. Compare that with someone such as basketball star LeBron James, who is at the top of his game but can only win one gold medal ? no more than one medal, period ? every four years. And while Phelps swims an impressive array of events, encompassing all four strokes and ranging in distance from 100 to 400 meters, it's hard to discount Nurmi winning five gold medals at the 1924 Games, including the 1,500 and 5,000 less than two hours apart. Lewis has to be considered for his versatility, winning everything from sprints to relays to the long jump.

"There are a ton of athletes that are in the conversation," Greene said. "You could debate it for hours and hours. It's hard to say someone is THE greatest. You have different eras. Eight years from now, it might be someone who comes by and does something far greater than (Phelps) did, in a different event and a different sport and get more gold medals than that."

But Greene added: "In this era, I'd give it to him."

Hard to argue with that.
