CSN: Hollywood, take notice of the 2012 A's

? ? ?
BOX SCORE

So it turns out that Billy Beane isn?t past his sell-by date at all. He just peaked too early, cinematically speaking.

You see, this is the A?s movie that should have been made, not the one that was released last year. This is the team made of the sparest parts, with the least reason to think grand thoughts, yet thinking them all the time anyway because . . . well, because why the hell not?.

Take Saturday. The A?s let down a crowd of 28,142 by not beating the New York Yankees with a walk-off hit, as they had the night before. Instead, they got a homer in the eighth inning from Brandon Inge, the greatest .200 hitter who ever .200-ed his way through a season.

Then, because that was insufficiently dramatic, they trotted out Sean Doolittle to save the game in the ninth because closer Ryan Cook was on E after three consecutive appearances. And all Doolittle and his raggedy used-to-be-an-infielder-before-his-shoulder-turned-into-an-ankle-ish had to do was face and vanquish Alex Rodriguez, Robinson Cano and Mark Teixeira, with a side of Andruw Jones.

$67.5 million and 1,574 home runs. And Doolittle went single, strikeout, strikeout and steal, strikeout.

[RECAP: Pratt's Instant Replay -- A's 2, Yankees 1]

You think that?s not a movie. You think that doesn?t beat the hell out of Jonah Hill?s slack-jawed face for two hours?

Well, maybe it doesn?t. Movies are a personal thing.

But this is a hell of a movie, and for Beane, who has watched those halcyon days of yore fade into questions of whether the finances have passed him by, this may turn out to be the wackiest revenge.

True, Orson Welles may not be the best comparison point here, but he did open his career with Citizen Kane and then never came close to matching it. Beane was the hottest thing in businessmen-watching-baseball for a long time, then the ground dried under his feet.

And now? Sean Doolittle strikes out 135 percent of the Oakland payroll to give the Yankees one more finger in the eye. After Inge, the new and improved Scott Hatteberg, homers to put the A?s ahead. After Jarrod Parker, a Diamondback a year ago with 73 pitches of major league experience, snuffed the Yankees on five hits.

Yes, this is the movie that should have been made, and would have been if Michael Lewis had only had the wit to foretell the future and wait a decade. And if Brad Pitt could have been convinced that Inge wouldn?t be a better role. And if Jon Hamm could have signed on to be a slightly grayer Beane.

Now this isn?t your boilerplate Beane?s-a-genius column, because this transcends master plans and outthinking the planet in search of value for dollars spent. This is hitting-on-17 stuff, and even if it doesn?t last . . . well, the other movie didn?t end with the last game, either. And everyone gets credit because, well, to do otherwise would ruin the story.

This is otherworldly, and maybe it won?t last because of the cruel gravity of the 162-game season. But this game alone should act as a hell of an example of what kind of film could be made if you just suspend belief and play it over the top.

Way over the top.

Yoenis Cespedes (the player the A?s would never have been in on in the old days) hit a zillion-foot homer to tie the game. Inge was all but chased out of Detroit (and isn?t that a feat in and of itself). Parker. Doolittle. And Cook, and Josh Reddick the manic pastry chef and right fielder, and Brandon McCarthy and his tweeting spouse, and miscellaneous other Brandons, and Tommy Milone, and Chris Carter, and Bartolo Colon, and the stray Australians, and best of all, the hologram of Marlon Brando as Manny Ramirez, the ghost of Flag Day Past.

Of course, it wouldn?t work with big stars stealing the screen, because that?s not what this team is. It might have to be sold as an ensemble piece, a sort of Animal House casting process where the most famous actor has the fewest lines. Why, there?s a place for Peter Dinklage here, I know it.

So yes, this is a movie. A hell of a movie, in fact. Way more cavalier than the first Major League, may more realistic than Eight Men Out, way more fun than Bang The Drum Slowly, and way more of a statement about the capriciousness of life than Bull Durham.

Indeed, this is the logical inheritor of the Moneyball title, except that this isn?t Moneyball. We?re not quite sure what it is yet, because this team isn?t quite sure what it is yet, either. They may not know how they?re doing it, to be honest, but they know it is getting done.

And however it gets pitched to the studio, it works as entertainment. It seriously does.

Joe Paterno's Gerald Ford leadership award rescinded

INDIANAPOLIS ? In addition to having wins vacated from his coaching record Monday, the late former head coach Joe Paterno no longer is the recipient of a leadership award that he originally won last year.

Last January, Paterno was presented with the 2011 NCAA President?s Gerald R. Ford Award ? a prize handed out to "an individual who has provided significant leadership as an advocate for intercollegiate athletics on a continuous basis during the course of their career," according to the NCAA.

Donald Remy, the NCAA general counsel and vice president of legal affairs, said Paterno would no longer be considered a recipient of the award as of Monday.

"The Ford award will be taken away [from Paterno's record]," Remy said.

In the 2011 season, Penn State beat Northwestern for, what was at the time officially Paterno's 400th win. However, that victory, along with all other wins by the Penn State football team from the 1998-2011 seasons, were vacated by the NCAA Monday as part of the sanctions handed down against the university.

Make sure that any contract you sign when buying a home has your interests at heart. You need to have time to get financing, arrange a home inspection and discuss any problems in the home that may need repair. A contract that is written to protect you, is essential in giving you peace of mind and allowing you to enjoy your new home.

Make use of your local re-use center for great deals on home improvement supplies. From remnants of new materials to used appliances, furniture, fixtures and more, these centers resell products donated to them by builders or renovators. They often donate a portion of their proceeds to charity, too, so you can fix up your home, recycle, and help a good cause all at the same time.

Roofing

You can install your metal roofing right over top of old asphalt tiles. This will save you time and money because you will not have costs involved in the removal. But if there are more than two layers they will have to be removed first.

Make sure to have your home inspected before starting any major renovations. Checking for roofing issues, termites, electrical issues and plumbing beforehand can save you a lot of trouble down the road. Sure the inside of the home is a big factor in a major home improvement plan, but neglecting the outside will lead to expensive repairs down the road. Look at the roof, siding, paint, and gutters for any signs they need replacing.

Gutters, downspouts and chimneys sometimes get overlooked during yearly maintenance and home improvements. These are important aspects of the home and they need to be cleaned and maintained to be sure they are working properly. A dirty chimney presents a very real fire hazard, and letting your downspouts and gutters get clogged can cause water intrusion and serious structural problems.

Herbs: A Small Business Opportunity ? JOURNAL OF ...

Bob Ewing:?????? People are desperate to generate sufficient income so that they can provide for their families; some have several jobs, just to achieve this; others have only the state to depend upon, and still others have nothing. This is unacceptable. There are ways out of this economic morass. One is to start your own business; however, a large percentage of new small businesses fail quickly and they do so for many reasons.
If a business is to succeed, two things are important; one is time, you will not get rich overnight. The second is knowledge; it is vital to know the business you are in.
Growing herbs in your backyard or expanding beyond your yard and using the yards of neighbours, friends and family is a potentially sound business opportunity.

But first; there are some questions you need to answer.

1- How much time do you have to devote to your business?
2- How much space do you have (indoors, outdoors, or both)?
3- What herbs do you want to grow and sell?
4- Who will you sell to; (general public, restaurants, stores)
5- What is your competition?
6- What will you charge?
7- Can you produce consistent quality herbs and on schedule?

Who will buy herbs? Local restaurants are possibilities. Consistent quality and delivery are musts. You will need to be able to deliver quality herbs when the chef wants them and chefs can be very demanding in what they want. This can be a tough market to crack but if you are determined and professional in your approach you can develop a consistent market for your herbs.

Grocery stores, especially, the smaller locally owned ones can be a good market. I have sold herbs (basil) to several small family owned grocery stores and generated a small profit. It more than covered my time and the cost of growing the herbs.

Will you sell fresh herbs, plants (seedlings) or dried herbs?

Basil, chives, cilantro, dill, oregano, rosemary, thyme and parsley are the most commonly used culinary herbs. Lemon balm is also popular. Do some research and find out what herbs are being sold in your area.

If you have a site that lets you set up a greenhouse and allows ready access, including parking for customers, then you may want to consider selling herb seedlings for home gardens. Many people want to grow their own herbs but prefer to start the process from a seedling plant rather than from seed.

Regardless of your choice of what to grow and who to sell to, you will need business cards; it is also wise to find out the zoning laws where you are located if you are planning to run the business from home and look into insurance.

A complete business plan may not be necessary; but you do need to know the market. Before you put a seed in the ground; find out who your competition is, what they are selling to whom they are selling and what they charge.

Ouya $99 video game console: It's the size of a Rubik's Cube ...

The Ouya is an upcoming video game console designed around an NVIDIA Tegra 3 quad-core processor and Android 4.0 operating system. The developers hope to use Android as a platform for playing video games on a TV, which will make it easier for game developers to create titles for the big screen without jumping through the hoops necessary to get a game on the Xbox, Wii or PlayStation.

Whether you believe the Ouya will revolutionize the gaming console market or not, the ?project has generated a lot of interest. More than 40,000 people have pledged over $5 million to the project, and many of those people will be among the first to get developer kits when they?re available in December or Ouya gaming consoles when they launch in March, 2013.

But here?s something you might not have known: The box is going to be small. Like, about the size of a Rubik?s Cube small.

Ouya

Up until now we?ve only seen rendered pictures showing what the Ouya will actually look like when it ships ? and I?always?figured the game console looked smaller than the controller because it was in the distance. But designer Yves Behar says it will be ?quite small, around the size of a Rubik?s cube.?

That will make the little console small enough to place almost anywhere in your living room, or to throw in a bag and carry with you.

Behar?s comments came during a Q&A with readers at video game blog Kotaku.

The small size makes sense. After all, the video game console has the same guts as a smartphone, which is designed to fit in your pocket. But somehow I kind of thought it?d be bigger.

In addition to the Tegra 3 processor, the box will have 1GB of RAM, 8GB of internal storage, an HDMI port, USB 2.0 port, and Ethernet port. It will features 802.11n WiFi, Bluetooth 4.0, and a wireless game controller that can be used over a Bluetooth or USB connection.

Kooragang Coal Workers at Increased Cancer Risk? No ...

The findings of a recent study have put Kooragang coal workers at higher risks of suffering from cancer. "An increased risk of cancer, beyond what is expected by chance, was observed among the employees at the Kooragang terminal?, the report said.

The suspected group includes both past as well as present employees of Port Waratah Coal Services' Kooragang Island terminal in the Hunter.

In their findings, the experts have put the workers at two to three times higher risks of getting affected from cancer as compared to the NSW and Australian populations or their colleagues who are working at other areas like Carrington in Newcastle.

Researchers from the University of Newcastle studied the health reports of 859 total workers over a period of 23 years. They found the workers to be at higher risks of suffering melanoma, prostate and bowel cancers.

The Newcastle Herald report also contained the comments of Consultant occupational and environmental physician Mr. Ian Gardner in its issue. He cleared in his statement all such announcements to be rumors. He said that no such cancers have been found to have any severe links due to the occupational or environmental exposures. The public health authorities have urged further investigation into the case to make things clearer.
