Western Illinois close to naming new football coach

Western Illinois will likely announce Minnesota-Duluth's Bob Nielson as the Leathernecks? new head football coach, perhaps as soon as Wednesday.

The two sides are believed to be finalizing a contract.

Missouri S&T head coach David Brown, the only other finalist to interview in Macomb, told the Duluth News Tribune that WIU athletics director Tim Van Alstine said the job was Nielson?s.

?Van Alstine didn?t use his name, but obviously, it?s only the two of us,? Brown told the newspaper. ?They?re just working on the details of it.?

Nielson has a 170-59-1 record in 20 seasons as a head coach, the last 10 of which cover two five-year stints at UMD where he also served as athletics director.

Nielson?s Bulldogs have made the Division II playoffs in each of the last five seasons, including national championships with perfect 15-0 records in 2008 and 2010. This year UMD finished 10-2 after being eliminated in the first round.

Nielson would replace Mark Hendrickson, who was fired after the Leathernecks finished the season 3-8.

Nielson had a base salary of $168,000 for his dual role at UMD. According ot the most recent figures available, Hendrickson made approximately $163,000 for the 2011 season. Brown told the Duluth News Tribune that he was offered $180,000 from Western if he was hired.
