It?s hard to figure out what Tori Amos?s 13th studio album really adds to the canon. To celebrate her first 20 years in the music business, Amos has revisited her impressive catalogue, with selections ranging from her 1992 debut release, Little Earthquakes, to her 2009 seasonal offering, Midwinter Graces.
There?s no denying the still-stunning power of haunting and harrowing beauties like Yes, Anastasia (edited here to half of its initial 10-minute length), Cloud On My Tongue and Winter: certainly, Amos?s gifts as composer and arranger are reaffirmed with this project. But virtually all of these songs were orchestrated in their first incarnation, albeit with a lighter touch. The addition of the Metropole Orchestra here adds volume and density, but little else, while the arrangements are otherwise more or less identical to the originals, down to being in the same key.
While there?s no downside to hearing some of Amos?s best work again, Gold Dust leaves us with little more than a desire to go back to the source.
