After a six-week search, Blake High promoted assistant football coach Darryl J. Gordon to the head position, Yellow Jackets athletic director Jesse Salters said on Monday.
Gordon is Blake's third head coach in less than a year. He replaces Micheal Burns, who resigned in early June. Burns stepped down after three months due to a difference of philosophies with Blake's administration over the direction of the program. Burns replaced Harry Hubbard, who was let go in December after compiling a 9-21 record.
Despite the turnover, Salters believes Gordon was right for the job all along. Salters said Gordon has a good understanding of Blake's needs, has a good relationship with the returning players and owns strong ties to the community. Salters said the main reason Gordon originally did not apply for the job was out of loyalty to Hubbard, whom Gordon also coached with at Jefferson and Plant under Darlee Nelson.
"To show you how dedicated he is to Blake, I asked him to look after the football program over the summer and with him, we haven't missed a beat,'' Salters said. "We've played in three 7-on-7 tournaments and have kept up with our conditioning at school. He didn't have to do that but that's how strongly he feels about the kids and this program."
Gordon, a Plant alum, will not be teaching at Blake. He is a manager for a cigar company in Ybor City. But he said his job affords him a schedule flexible enough to accept his first head coaching position. He said being a head coach "never really dawned on me" until he saw the need Blake had for one this summer.
Plant volleyball coach resigns
After one season leading the Plant volleyball program, Amy Rumore stepped down to take a teaching position in Naples, Panthers principal Rob Nelson announced.
Rumore took over as the Panthers head coach in May 2011 and led the Panthers to the Class 8A-Region 2 final, where they lost to rival Palm Harbor University. Before the 2011 season, Plant had won five consecutive state titles and 10 overall.
Rumore, who was a standout for the University of Tampa, was part of that dominating run by Plant both as a player and assistant coach.
Tampa Catholic officials punished
After violating a rule governing who at the school can offer financial aid to students, Tampa Catholic received an official reprimand from the Florida High School Athletic Association.
In addition, Tampa Catholic principal Tom Reidy, athletic director Freddie Langiotti, football coach Bob Henriquez and assistant football coach David Lewis must attend an FHSAA compliance seminar this year.
The violation stems from an offer made last year by Lewis via text messages to the parent of a former TC football player who had just completed his freshman season. The messages discuss the possible acquisition of $2,000 in financial aid for the player during the 2011-12 school year.
Tampa Catholic self-reported the violation to the FHSAA this year. Following an internal investigation by TC officials, the parent of the player claims the money never materialized. As a result, the parents withdrew their son from TC, as well as their daughter, who enrolled as an incoming freshman.
FHSAA rules governing financial assistance prohibit athletic staff or coaches from "playing any role in the process of deciding which students receive financial assistance or the types or amount of assistance they will be given."
