?The Martin Institute at Stonehill will be hosting a two primary election forums for the candidates in the 4th congressional district.
The August 14 forum will begin at 6:00 with Democratic candidates Rachel Brown, Joe Kennedy, and Herb Robinson.
At 8:00 we will host Republicans Sean Bielat, Elizabeth Childs, and David Steinhof. ?Both forums will be moderated by the associate publisher and editor of The Herald News and Taunton Daily Gazette, Lisa Strattan. ?On the panel asking questions of the candidates will be Sean Kelly from WCVB, Adam Reilly from WGBH and reporters from The Herald News and Wicked Local.
I am particularly proud that the Martin Institute is hosting this forum and a general election forum in the fall. ?Easton was a last minute addition into the newly created 4th District and we join North Attleboro, the hometown of our namesake, Joseph W. Martin. ?Having the place of his birth and early life in the same district as the institution dedicated to preserving his memory would have been pleased Mr. Martin.
Martin was also a newspaperman who served as managing editor and publisher of the North Attleboro Evening Chronicle, the paper he delivered as a young man. ?The paper merged with the Attleboro Sun in 1971. ? When Martin was elected to Congress in 1924, he served in the 15th District in an overwhelmingly Republican state.
He lost a renomination fight to the liberal Republican Margaret Heckler in 1966 in the then 10th district in a state that became overwhelmingly Democratic. ?She?d lose in a redistricting fight to Barney Frank in 1982 and would go on to serve as Secretary of Health and Human Services. ?Frank?s retirement this year has opened it up the storied seat.
The forum is open to the public and members of the press. ?For tickets or credentials, please call 508.565.1131.
